Progressive Rock Keyboard: Hal Leonard Keyboard Style Series [Paperback] Review

Progressive Rock Keyboard: Hal Leonard Keyboard Style Series [Paperback]I don't why anyone has'nt written a review for this book yet. Its perfect, and the accompanying CD is so helpful to help learn the rhythms of progressive rock keyboard. I would greatly recommend this book if you are sick of playing yankee doodle or any other book with boring sheet music. Contained in the book is an adequate description of the genre and presents perfect examples that you can learn. I found this book very satisfying and not too hard. I also have the rock keyboard and find that one great as well. So do buy these books.

Improvising Blues Piano (w/cd) (Music Sales America) [Paperback] Review

Improvising Blues Piano [Paperback]Martan Mann can most definately play piano. The accompanying CD may almost be worth the price to hear him play. However, you're looking for instruction if you're reading this.I don't want to slam his product too hard.I'll just say he doesn't teach well and there's not allot of real meat here for beginners.I've also purchased Andrew D. Gordon's 100 Ultimate Blues Riffs.Riffs in all keys with many many different basslines and virtually zero instruction. Then, finally, I got my hands on something I absolutely love and can recommend wholeheartedly to anyone without a vast musical background who wants to play the blues.Check out the book/cd combos level 1 and 2 by David Bennet Cohen. You won't be dissappointed.I just ordered "Improvising Blues Piano" by Tim Richards and am very excited about it as well. One more you might look into.

The Hammond Organ - Beauty in the B: Second Edition (Keyboard Musician's Library) [Paperback] Review

The Hammond Organ - Beauty in the B: Second Edition [Paperback]As a Hammond B3 player for more years than I'd like to admit, I WILL admit I enjoyed this book tremendously. Now, it's not a tech manual, but I thought the book was laid out very well. It gave a good description of who Laurens Hammond was, such as being inventor of the electric clock. When doing research there's always gonna be some folks out there who may disagree with some statement, but that's just natural. I think that Mark Vail did an incredibly thorough job of researching this instrument and its history. He showed that he has a personal interest in it as well. A lot of people can just write a book 'cause they're paid to, but Mark has passion for the B. He showed it all the way through. I liked the reproductions of some of the original brochures, with the pictures of the different models. I remember those from when I was a kid -- my mother went to buy a Hammond and brought those brochures home. Quite often when I'm talking with someone about a particular model, I'll take out Mark's book and show them the photos and descriptions. He gives the year the models were built, what their price was -- that sort of stuff is very helpful and just plain fun to know.

FASTFORWARD: 12-BAR BLUES PIANO (Fast Forward (Music Sales)) [Audiobook] [Paperback] Review

FASTFORWARD: 12-BAR BLUES PIANO) [Paperback]This book provides a painless introduction to playing blues piano in six styles: Basic Shuffle, Boogie Woogie, Walking Bass, Stride, Jazz, and Rock. It presents the left and right hand parts separately, then throws them together. Each example has two tracks on the CD, with and without the piano part. The left hand parts are quite complete, but the right hand parts are a little thin, leaving out slides, crushed notes and tremelos. However, the backing tracks on the CD are outstanding. Once you master the material in the book, you can reuse the CD backing tracks with licks from other books like David Bennet Cohen's Blues Piano or Mark Harrison's Blues Piano. Had the author included more material, this could be a 5 satr book.

Improvisation At The Piano ( A Systematic Approach For The Classically Trained Pianist) [Paperback] Review

Improvisation At The Piano [Paperback]This is probably the most effective (best) book I've read for any acquired skill.

I'm a pianist (currently working on my Masters at a conservatory) and was searching for a book on improvisation within the classical medium.I was frustrated because I couldn't find any book with the exception of this.

Thank God that I could only find this book.Yesterday, I read through most of it.The exercises are brilliantly isolated to help acquire rhythmic, harmonic, dynamic competence, etc.It demonstrates how to recognize the modes within a passage of a few to several chords, recognize how closely related they are, etc...

You definitely have to have a good backround in theory to understand this whole text, but even if you do not, the first 20 pages or so will stretch your mind and greatly improve your compitence (in terms of improvisation).

The balance between demonstration and exercise is just about perfect.Because they include multiple demonstrations before each exercise (and there are PLENTY of exercises), the exercises are never confusing or misunderstood.Within the demonstrations, great (basic to more advanced) improvisation is shown over the bassline or whatever backing your going to play in your left or right hand before you must do it yourself. They make sure to include certain key ideas within these improv demonstrations, such as outlining a certain chord with embellishment, emphasizing a certain tone, etc.

I plan on dedicated some of my time every day to this book because I believe that we are living in a time where musicians are not well-rounded like they were in the 20's-60's.... we cannot transpose at sight, improvise, understand theory like we used to.

Books like this are truly a savior to this art.

The authors Brian Chung and Dennis Thurmond demonstrate ways of improvising over classics such as the bass lines to Fur Elise and Mozart's C Major sonata, and then changing them to the relative modes etc.I agree with the person who wrote the review above me; this book will help you understand the theory behind music, which in turn helps memorize and understand the composer's compositional style/intentions.Moreso than this, it will do wonders for the ear and the ability to recover from mistakes in performance.I believe that it has potential to cut a performer's memory slips at least in half if not much less during any given performance. With proper improvisation ability comes proper ear training comes a more thorough learning of the music and less of a chance to rely on muscle memory etc....

Great stuff!I rarely write a review on Amazon but this book is truly deserving.I plan on teaching this text to my more advanced students as well.

I applaud the authors of this book.Mastery of an instrument should not just entail a replication of repertoire, but the ability to sightread, transpose, improvise, and know your way around the instrument backwards and forwards.

If I am able to conquer this text, I will finally be able to say that I have true mastery of the instrument.

Jazz, Blues, Boogie & Swing for Piano [Paperback] Review

Jazz, Blues, Boogie & Swing for Piano [Paperback]I'm a self taught amateur who can just about crash through a hymn at about 1/4 speed third or fourth time around sight-reading-wise, but, these arrangements I can play (apart from the left hand tenths)given about two months per tune, (doing two or three at once) because they don't seem to get boring even after the 100th attempt. There is enough "guts" in the arrangements to hold my attention long enough for me to learn them.
They are particularly "easy" to memorise, that's the trick and also they are short.
If you don't want too simple or grindingly chromatically brainy but do want the "open" clean sounds of happier times from honest nostalgia to gutsy-slow-blues to brain-twisting-makes-ya-grin-boogie then this is for you!

Bebop Jazz Piano: Hal Leonard Keyboard Style Series [Paperback] Review

Bebop Jazz Piano: Hal Leonard Keyboard Style Series [Paperback]I have a few of the other books in this series and find them all great! John Valerio is a wonderful composer and teacher and has a very similar style to Mark Harrison (another composer in this series). This book includes important information about chords, voicings, harmony, chord progressions, scales, tonality, melodic figures and patters, comping, characteristic tunes, styles of Bud Powell and Theolonious Monk...anything that is used in any type of bebop jazz. It goes through the history and evolution of Bebop. The book moves quickly but provides the information that is important. It comes with a very handy CD which allows to hear what it's supposed to sound like. I highly recommend this book and have found that using it with some of the other books in the series is beyond helpful!

The Piano Handbook: A Complete Guide for Mastering Piano [Spiral-bound] Review

The Piano Handbook: A Complete Guide for Mastering Piano [Spiral-bound]This really is the best of the few decent books in this category - and one of only a small handful that don't treat you like an idiot. Concomitantly, if you ARE in idiot, this book won't work for you. As other reviewers have noted, the pace is definitely fast compared to the 'graded' lesson books commonly used by piano teachers. But using the CD, and practicing every exercise until you truly understand it - you WILL go far, and fast, with this one. I've carefully checked every other "teach yourself piano" title I've seen in the local stores, and even bought and returned a few. This one, however, is a keeper. By the end of the book, you'll be playing some fairly impressive classical pieces (more than enough to impress your friends - unless they're experienced pianists!). Along the way, you get a very nice background in piano history (great photos an illustrations!), and you'll gain a good, solid understanding of reading music. (hm - except for all those british musical terms. Feh. Luckily, American-style is included as well.)
Generally, you really, really should try to get a teacher. But if you just can't afford it, this book is the next best thing. Combine it with a few videos/DVDs (like the "Van Cliburn competition" - YES!, or even buy "The Pianist" or "Shine" right here on Amazon) so you can get an idea of how pianists hold and move their hands. (not that you'll move like these people for a long while!).
There is a crazy typographical error in my edition of the book, where an entire paragraph is repeated! This is only a little sad, because the space could have been put to use for more of the author's great information. It's not enough to drop my rating! The binding (at least in my edition) is spiral - a VERY SMART move, as it sits nicely on the music desk. I have to make photo copies to use the sheet music in other books!
This one has got my full recommendation. And better yet, if you have any musical background at all, or have had some piano lessons (even in your distant past) this book will have you flying along in no time.

Blues Piano: Hal Leonard Keyboard Style Series (Keyboard Instruction) [Paperback] Review

Blues Piano: Hal Leonard Keyboard Style Series [Paperback]I got this book along with a number of other blues books, and this one has been my favorite. It doesn't contain as much material as the multivolume Alfred series, but I find the organization, presentation, and *especially* the examples to be superior in Mark's work. The way the examples build section by section and chapter by chapter is exquisite. They are musically interesting yet very focused on the point at hand--I always enjoyed playing through the examples, but was never confused by unnecessary complications.

The companion CD is the best I've seen in any music instruction book, ever. Most examples have the left and right hand parts on the left and right channels, so you can mute one speaker or the other for "hands seperate" practicing.I personally don't use this much, as I prefer to work it out with the metronome, but I'm glad it's there and you may appreciate it.On tracks that have a backing band, the band is on one side and the keyboard on the other so you can play along to just the band. Finally, the "complete" examples at the end of the book feature a "slow" and "fast" version on the CD.One nitpick: I wish he'd included (in the text) the metronome settings he used, making it easier to practice/jam without the CD.

I've got several of the Hal Leonard books in this series, and they're not all by Mark Harrison. His books are definitely a cut above. All in all, if you have any interest in the subject whatsoever, you can't go wrong with this book.
